Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) is a nationwide public cleanliness campaign organized as part of observing October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, as Swachh Bharat Diwas. This campaign has been conducted every year since 2017. The core theme of Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 is "Swachhata Mein Sahbhag: Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat"—which highlights the idea of achieving a Clean India and Developed India through everyone's participation in sanitation. It aims to foster collective action from the community.
In Kerala, these public cleanliness initiatives are implemented with community participation under the name and concept "Kaiyodu Kai" (Hand in Hand). The fundamental objective of the "Kaiyodu Kai" concept is for everyone to join hands and come forward in sanitation activities.
Led by local self-government institutions, the campaign ensures the active participation of elected representatives, officials, Haritha Karma Sena, Kudumbashree, students, youth, voluntary organizations, the trading community, various government departments, and the general public.
The SHS 2026 campaign is scheduled to run from September 17, 2026, to October 02, 2026. As part of the campaign, special emphasis will be given to:
- Transformation of cleanliness target units
- Cleaning of public places
- Student and youth participation
- Safety and welfare of Safai Mitras (sanitation workers)
- Waste segregation at source
- Community participation
- "Waste to Wealth" activities
As the first phase of this campaign, the Cheriyamundam Grama Panchayat unveiled its official logo on 18/09/2026.
