Water Budget
Water Budget
A Water Budget is an assessment comparing the total water available in a region with the amount used for various needs. Just as we maintain an income and expenditure statement for financial matters, this is an income-expenditure report for water.
💧 Major Components of Water Budget
Inflow (Water Availability)
Total water received through rainfall and available from sources such as rivers, streams, ponds, and groundwater.
Outflow (Water Demand)
Total water used for domestic needs, agriculture, industry, animal husbandry, guest workers, tourism, and other purposes.
🎯 Key Objectives of Water Budget
Identify Water Deficit
Identify in advance which months a region is likely to experience water shortages (Seasonal Deficit).
Prevent Misuse
Identify high water-consuming sectors and implement micro-irrigation practices (e.g., drip, sprinkler) and other conservation techniques.
Strategic Planning
Scientifically plan well recharging, rainwater harvesting, and the rejuvenation of streams and ponds to raise groundwater levels.
Ensure Water Security
Conserve water for future generations and find permanent solutions to summer drinking water shortages.
