Kudumbashree
Kudumbashree – State Poverty Eradication Mission is an innovative setup established in 1998 by the Government of Kerala (Department of Local Self-Government) with the objective of poverty eradication and women empowerment. Its activities are implemented through a community-based organization network formed under the leadership of Local Self-Government Institutions (Panchayat/Municipality).
▣ Organizational Structure
Neighborhood Group (NHG)
Primary level consisting of 10–20 members, with one woman representative (aged 18 or above) per household.
Area Development Society (ADS)
Federation functioning at the ward level as a collective of Neighborhood Groups.
Community Development Society (CDS)
Apex organizational level with elected office-bearers at the Panchayat/Municipality level.
◎ Key Objectives
- Poverty Eradication: Primary objective and core priority.
- Economic Empowerment: Through income generation, entrepreneurship, and microfinance.
- Social Development: In areas such as health, education, and Destitute-Free Kerala.
- Women Empowerment: Ensuring leadership, participation in decision-making, and gender justice.
1. Economic Development / Livelihood
- Micro-Enterprises: Cafe Kudumbashree, Janakeeya Hotels, Nutrimix, Haritha Karma Sena, Construction Groups, Apparel Groups.
- Bank Linkage & Savings-Credit: Bank linkage loans and self-help credit activities for lakhs of NHGs.
- Marketing: Online marketing facilities through ONDC platforms.
- Agriculture / Animal Husbandry: Joint farming, Farmer JLGs, processing, branding, and expos/fairs.
2. Social Development & Women Empowerment
- Destitute-Free Kerala: Identification and comprehensive rehabilitation of poor/destitute families.
- BUDS, Balasabha: Education, protection, and overall development of children.
- Women Empowerment: Gender self-learning programs, Snehitha Gender Help Desk.
- Skill Development: Vocational and skill training for rural youth via DDU-GKY 2.0.
3. Other Key Interventions
- PMAY-LIFE (Kerala): Kudumbashree functions as the nodal agency.
- SVEP / SRLM-NRLM: Support for rural entrepreneurship and livelihood activities.
- Marketing Interventions: 'Onakkani' markets during Onam season for price control.
